What the Internet is

The Internet is a huge network of computers connected with each other serving millions of users all over the world. The origin of public Internet goes back to the late 70s and since that time the number of users has been increasing. The Internet is very helpful in our everyday life. It supports a variety of services. First of all one can easily find any sort of information and share it with others. It’s also possible to create your own web sites and publish ideas and information for a large audience. It’s very convenient to advertise goods on the Internet as well as to buy them. Secondly, the Internet serves for people’s communication. You can make calls and take part in on-line tele- and video conferences. One of the most popular services is e-mail (electronic mail) which is much cheaper and quicker than the ordinary mail. You can exchange messages, photos, films and lots of other stuff using it. And finally, the Internet is used for transferring large amounts of data across it.

Why exploit the Internet

People exploit the Internet in order to access news, weather and sports reports or what is more to plan and book holidays. It also provides great opportunities for keeping in touch with friends and relatives or to find someone.

There are two basic ways to surf the internet for information. If you know the internet address you just enter it and find what you need. If not, you should use a search program. The most popular ones are Google, Yandex, Rambler or Yahoo. In these programs we can just type the word or name of thing we would like to find and then press «enter». Not everyone is aware that Internet had started as a military experiment in the United States in late 1960s. It was supposed to help to survive during the nuclear war. If everything around got polluted and people couldn’t get out of their homes, Internet would be the only source of information and way of communication. It was the safest and quickest path from one computer to another. For this reason Internet was designed. As long as there was a single route between the computers, people could stay in touch. Subsequently, the modems were invented. They were the devices which allowed the computers to send certain information through telephone lines. Modem has opened doors to the Internet for millions of people. Since then the number of users is constantly growing.

Today, the Internet can be accessed almost anywhere and by numerous means, even by mobile devices. It offers great flexibility to students and employees. Distant education becomes more and more popular. Students can get help with homework and other assignments, take up self-guided learning, or simply look up the details on interesting fact. Work has also become easier with the help of such low cost and instant sharing of knowledge. Another interesting Internet feature includes remote access which allows several computers to share information. Any office worker can access his e-mails or data from anywhere at any time. However, there are some problems, such as absence as security and control.

Lately computers have filled our life. Now they are almost in each family. We have got used to them and we do not imagine our leisure without this miracle-machine.

With the help of computers the Internet has entered into our life. It became an integral part of a life of each person. Now people cannot live a day without checking of mail and visiting their favourite sites. The Internet is not only the assistant in daily work, it is also the other world in which there are mail boxes, libraries, photo galleries, games, shops. By means of the Internet people can travel to different cities, visit tourist places, communicate with people.

Recently many people ask a question: " Is the Internet harmful or useful? ". I think, that on this question there is no certain answer. In fact on the one hand the Internet is a very good and useful thing. And on the other hand it has many negative functions: dependence, the waste of time, money, health.

Certainly, the Internet can be the excellent assistant in information search. But if we spend a lot of time on the Internet we`ll have some problems. We lose a touch with the real world, get in a full dependence on a computer. I think, that it is important to learn to distinguish a side between a real life and a life on the Internet. For that it is necessary to understand, what is really important on the Internet and what is not . And then the Internet will be not the terrible enemy, but the indispensable assistant.

Люди теряют связь с реальным миром, попадают в полную зависимость от компьютера. Я считаю, что важно научиться различать грань между реальной жизнью и жизнью в Интернете. Но, чтобы это сделать, нужно понять, что действительно важно в Интернете, а что нет. И тогда Интернет будет не страшным врагом, а незаменимым помощником.
